Anonymous Donor Gifts Rare Ancient Coin To Museums Worcestershire

2015-12-26 Sat

The staff at Museums Worcestershire received an early Christmas present in the form of a 2000-year old coin from an anonymous donor earlier this week. The coin is an inscribed Iron Age gold stater which dates back to c. 20 to 40 CE, in the last few years before the Roman conquest. The coin has been studied by the curators at the British Museum and is a part of the Western Regional Series. It is believed to have been issued by the Dobunni Tribe who lived in modern-day Gloucestershire and its surrounding counties.

The obverse features a three-tailed horse while the reverse depicts a tree or a branch on one side.
